Abstract Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is widely used in manufacturing for manual, automatic, and robotic applications. The main advantage of this process is the high quality of welds and good appearance of the seam without spatter or slag. However, on the downside, GTAW is limited in terms of welding speed and penetration compared to other robotic welding processes. For this scope we have developed a new process for welding parts with small thickness (0.8 - 4 mm), which combines quality TIG process, with good features high welding speed and good penetration of the process of arc welding with fusible electrode in protective gas (MIG / MAG). The key part of this technology is an original torch design concept. The new welding process, in the name TOPTIG is patented by Air Liquide Welding group. Filler material is oriented at an angle (optimum), crossing the gas nozzle and is very close to the tungsten electrode. This configuration provides the advantage of reduced overall dimensions of accessibility and good head for welding, robotic welding for parts with complex shapes and sizes. The tests were conducted under Air Liquide Welding group for various applications on thin sheets of various qualities: carbon steel, stainless steel, coated parts (galvanized sheets).

Abstract The paper presents the state of the art related to the technological solutions for the arc welding processes robotisation which are applied to the subassemblies of transport vehicles. In the first part of the paper, traditional and modern arc welding processes applied to the transport vehicle subassemblies are presented as well as the new range of base and filler materials used in the manufacturing processes are described. In the second part of the paper, the authors conduct an investigation on the types of welded joints used in the manufacturing processes from automotive, railway and aerospace industries, in order to achieve specific correlations between welded joints characteristics and the appropriate robotised technological solution. Finally, several applications using modern robotic systems, specific to the automotive, railway and aerospace industries are considered, that highlights the improvement of the manufacturing processes productivity and welded joints quality.
