Abstract: The presentation gives an overview of the nowadays problem of the increase of aging of technological and civilinfrastructures. The general context of structural aging, from the standpoint of failure risks and economic implicationsis evoked. Issues related to structural ageing, as structural age managements, life-extension and costsimplication, in correlation with legal and economic environment, are discussed. Circumstances in which structureslife-extension becomes possible, a theme emerging more and more into actuality, and rigors to be followedfor the accomplishment of structural life extensions, with due attention given to implied subsequent risks offailures which may endanger the society at large and environment, is discussed. Interaction between structuralaging, reliability, maintenance and occasioned overhaul costs is put into perspective with emphasize on the issueof economic and safe time when remedial interventions ought to be made.Keywords: structural aging, costs, failure risk, risk management, life extension, structural maintenance, degradation,damage, fatigue, corrosion, hazard, loading, environment action, aircraft, off-shore exploitation, bridges,civil infrastructure, public perception.

Factors determining the occurrence of the burn through phenomenon when repairing by welding the hydrocarbons transmission pipelines

Abstract: When repairing the defective areas of the transmission pipelines for petroleum, liquid petroleum products and natural gas using procedures which include fusion welding operations executed onto in-service pipelines, two unwanted phenomena could take place: burn through of the pipe wall due to the action of the electric arc used as an energy source for welding and hydrogen induced cracking (also named cold cracking or delayed cracking). This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental research program aiming at tracing and ranking according to their importance the factors that determine the occurrence of the first phenomenon and at assessing the technical and technological solutions which avoid its triggering and ensure the safe execution of the welding operations for the repair of in-service (under pressure) transmission pipelines. Keywords: hydrocarbons transmission pipeline – HTP, pipelines repair by welding, repair of in-service pipelines; pipeline wall burn through (due to the electric arc used for welding) – PBT.

Assessment of melting and deposition characteristics of MAG welding wires

Abstract: The paper presents the quantitative assessment results of the melting and deposition characteristics of MAG welding solid wire (G463 C G4Si1), MAG welding basic tubular wire (T 42 4 B M 3 H5) and MAG welding rutile tubular wire (T 46 2 P M 1 H5), all of them having diameter of 1.2 mm. Shielding gas CO2 and gas mixture Corgon were used in the experimental tests in order to protect the welding pool against the contamination with gases from the atmosphere. An universal welding source with a welding tractor were used as equipments for the welding of the samples. Six longitudinal welds were performed by deposition welding on S275N steel samples with dimensions of 200 x 150 x 6, in [mm], in 1G/PA horizontal position. The experimental and analytical results related to the melting and deposition characteristics are discussed in detail. Finally, important conclusions on the investigations outcomes are briefly presented. Keywords: MAG welding, solid wire, basic tubular wire, rutile tubular wire.
