Building up of the lower support of a matrix for forging by a heterogeneous welded joint

Modern forging workshops are equipped with high-power forging hammers, making multiple pieces in a molding cycle. The steels from which such devices are made are of the type 50CrMo4 (1.7288) EN 10250-3, having a hardness that can be controlled, good machinability and the chromium and molydenum content can provide high uniformity and strength. This steel is especially suitable for forging, responding quickly to thermal treatments and the ability to resist stress at high temperatures.
The paper presents the welding procedure for the repairing of a welding defect in form of a crack.
The welding was made by SMAW process of a heterogeneous joint, using an electrode different from the base metal.

This article includes a general, updated presentation of the tungsten inert gas welding process (TIG), the main advantages and disadvantages and the classic working alternatives of this process. In conjunction with these considerations the article presents new working alternatives: pulsing with high frequency (up to about 15 ÷ 17,5 kHz), the term pulsing frequency, etc. Also, there are listed the main requirements for a TIG welding equipment needed to be able to use the high frequency pulsing process (hyperpulse).

The main advantages are presented on concrete welding applications.The authors recommend the new technology as a possible replacement for the old and expensive TIG welding process and for the plasma and/or laser welding. These recommendations are based on the advantages of the new technology: absolutely sure ignition with low energy, quick formation of the electric arc, avoiding deformation, great focussing of the arc, low mechanic inertia using high working frequencies, high current density with enhancement of the arc focalization, high penetration with higher speed in welding of thin sheets.

The important lowering of the fabrication costs and the quality improvement of the welded joints are leading to the growth of the productivity.

This work contains complementary information to the article published in SUDURA no. 3/2017, related to the newest list with references to harmonized standards for pressure equipment and harmonized supporting standards for materials used in manufacturing pressure equipment, specific to welding and allied processes.
